Private Chauffeur or Personal Driver: What Is the Difference?

One is an invoice. The other is an employee, a vehicle, an insurance policy and a holiday rota.

Black Car & Executive

What each one actually is

A personal driver is an employee. You pay a salary and employer contributions, provide or maintain a vehicle, arrange commercial insurance, and manage holiday, sickness and performance like any other role.

A retained private chauffeur is a service. You agree a pattern of hours with a company, the same chauffeur is assigned wherever possible, and you receive an invoice. The vehicle, insurance, licensing, maintenance and cover are the company's problem.

Where the crossover point sits

Below roughly full-time hours, the retained arrangement is almost always cheaper once every cost of employment is counted — and the true cost of an employed driver is considerably more than the salary line.

At genuinely full-time hours with unpredictable demands, employing someone may work out cheaper, and any honest operator will tell you so. What tips it back the other way is cover: when your employee is ill, there is nobody. When a retained chauffeur is ill, cover comes from the same team, briefed with your stored profile.

What you keep either way

  • The same person on most bookings, who knows the routine
  • Stored preferences, addresses and standing instructions
  • Child seats fitted correctly where children travel
  • Discretion, applied as policy rather than as a favour

What you avoid with the retained version is payroll, an insurance policy, a depreciating asset in the driveway and a management relationship. See private chauffeur service for how the standing arrangements work.

Travelling to Toronto, or out of it?

Most trips that need a chauffeur also need a flight, a hotel or a car at the other end. BookingWorldwide.net covers all three — useful for wedding guests flying in, corporate teams heading to a conference, and anyone building a trip around the ride we are providing.

Straight answers

Frequently asked

Can a retained chauffeur drive my own car?

Our standard service supplies the vehicle as well as the chauffeur, because that is where the insurance sits. Driving a client-owned vehicle involves different arrangements — ask and we will tell you honestly whether we can accommodate it.

How few hours can I retain?

Standing arrangements start well below full-time — a few mornings a week is common. Predictable blocks are easier for us to schedule, which is why they are quoted better than scattered ad-hoc work.

What happens when my chauffeur is on holiday?

Cover comes from within the same team, briefed with your stored profile in advance. That continuity is the main practical advantage over employing one person.
