The small conventions
- The rear passenger side is the traditional seat for a single passenger — it is the safest to exit onto a kerb. Sit wherever you like; that is just why the door gets opened there.
- Let the chauffeur take the luggage. It is part of the job and they know how the vehicle loads.
- Say if you want the temperature changed. They cannot feel what you feel, and they would rather adjust it than have you sit in silence being cold.
- Say if you want quiet. Professional chauffeurs default to silence, but a word at the start settles it.
Timing, which is the one that matters
Chauffeurs arrive early — typically fifteen minutes — and wait quietly. Treat the pickup time as the moment the vehicle pulls away, not the moment you start looking for your keys.
If you are running late, a single text is worth more than an apology later. It lets the chauffeur re-plan the route rather than sit watching the clock.
What a chauffeur will and will not do
Will: carry luggage, hold an umbrella, wait, take direction on the route, adjust the schedule, stay silent, and tell you honestly how long something will realistically take.
Will not: exceed licensed passenger capacity, permit alcohol where a passenger is under nineteen, leave a vehicle unattended with a group inside, or continue a trip that has become unsafe. Those are licence conditions, not preferences.
